Resumo: Objective: This study aims to identify research related to knowledge about Potentially Malignant Oral Disorders (PMOD) through a scientometric study to ascertain temporal trends, themes, countries and research gaps. Health promotion and education strategies enable early diagnosis of PMOD to reduce associated morbidity and mortality. Study Design: Article searches were conducted on PubMed and Web of Science databases using the following search string: "Knowledge AND Potentially Malignant Oral Disorders". The Rayyan software was used to read article titles and abstracts, thus determining study inclusion and exclusion. Results: In the end, 40 articles were selected. The majority of studies were conducted in Asia, where chewing tobacco and smoking are prevalent habits. There was an increasing trend in study production; however, during the pandemic period, a decline was observed. Conclusions: Nevertheless, knowledge about these disorders, whether among dentists or the general population, is insufficient. Promoting strategies aimed at enhancing public awareness, especially about oral self-examination, and improving the clinical experience of dental students and dentists is necessary for the detection and proper clinical management of cases.
