Resumo: Objective: Review the literature about anticancer effect of Melatonin in the head and neck carcinogenesis. Study Design: An electronic search was conducted using five electronic databases (PubMed, Science Direct, Web of Science, Embase and Scopus), grey literature and reference lists. Articles were screened against inclusion/exclusion criteria and data from eligible studies were retrieved and analyzed. Results: The search strategy identified 4200 articles, with 41 articles being included in this research. On head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), melatonin was reported to have anti-proliferative effects, playing a role in cell death, inducing apoptosis, as well as antiangiogenic effects. It was also observed that melatonin inhibits cell migration and invasion and causes metabolomic changes on HNSCC cells. Furthermore, melatonin showed good results when combined with neoadjuvant chemotherapy and with radiation. Conclusion: Melatonin exerts a protective effect in head and neck carcinogenesis.
