Título: TRABECULAR BONE MICROARCHITECTURE OF THE IRRADIATED JAWS: PRELIMINARY RESULTS

Resumo: The study aimed to evaluate the trabecular bone microarchiteture of the mandible of patients submitted to radiotherapy on the head and neck compared with non-irradiated individuals (NIR). Irradiated (IR) patients and the ones with osteoradionecrosis (ORN) were included (n=10) and had a bone fragment removed for analysis, which was compared to NIR (n=5). The samples were analyzed through microtomography (µCT, 19 µm voxel size). Bone volume fraction and bone surface was 37.36±21.96 and 17.72±2.72 in IR/ORN, and 44.67±21.18 and 17.90±9.01 in NIR, respectively (p=>0.05). Connectivity density was 17.59 (11.95;28.39) in IR/ORN and 36.16 (19.48;572.7) in NIR (p=0.09). The trabecular number was 1.91±0.75 and 2.21±0.30 in IR/ORN and NIR, respectively (p=0.41). Trabecular thickness was 0.23 (0.19;0.24) in IR/ORN and 0.26 (0.22;0.35) in NIR (p=0.09). Trabecular separation was 0.34±0.15 and 0.26±0.12 in IR/ORN and NIR, respectively (p=0.34). In conclusion, a similar trabecular bone structure was found for irradiated and non-irradiated individuals.
