Resumo: Carcinoma cuniculatum (CC) is a rare epithelial neoplasm, representing an unusual variety of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Histologically it is characterized by deep penetrating sinuses containing keratotic debris, making it susceptible to underdiagnosis.
We present 3 cases seen during 2017-2023. They presented clinically as tumor lesions, fistulizing, and superficial blood vessels. The ages of the patients were 13, 70, and 80 years and the locations were jaw, upper maxilla, and trigone respectively.
Multiple partial biopsies were performed, with CC not being the initial diagnosis. The definitive diagnosis was reached based on data collected from the anamnesis, clinical examination, histopathological and imaging analysis.
The infrequency and the absence of cytological anaplasia, make CC susceptible to multiple negative biopsies and misdiagnosis. We emphasize clinical examination and anamnesis, together with the need to form work teams as a facilitating tool to establish the diagnosis.
