Resumo: INTRODUCTION: Epidemiological studies are used as basis for developing strategies for prevention and treatment.OBJECTIVE: To determine the occurrence of oral lesions at the Dental Specialties Center on the Unified Health System (SUS) from September 2022 to September 2023.STUDY DESIGN: 131 biopsies were perfomed; variables included histopathological examination results; gender, age, and lesion location for carcinoma cases.RESULTS: Distribution of lesions by gender: 53% female, 47% male. The most common lesions: Inflammatory Fibrous Hyperplasia (31%), Carcinoma (11%), Traumatic Fibroma (11%), Inflammatory Process (9%), Mucocele (6%), Lichenoid Mucositis (6%), Papilloma (6%), Lichen Planus (2%), as well as Leukoplakia, Ranula, Pigmented Lesions, Lipoma, Hemangioma, Pleomorphic Adenoma, Actinic Cheilitis, Sialolithiasis, Bone Cyst, Nodular Lymphoid Hyperplasia. Of the 15 cases of oral cancer, 11 were squamous cell carcinoma, 01 mucoepidermoid carcinoma, 01 adenoid cystic carcinoma, 01 lymphoma, and 01 carcinoma in situ; with 7 female, 8 male. The age range of cancer cases varied between 50 and 79 years; the most frequent locations were the tongue followed by the buccal mucosa, lower lip, floor of the mouth and hard palate.CONCLUSION: With oral cancer being the second most common lesion in this study, early identification and diagnosis are essential for treatment success and effectiveness of preventive measures.
