Resumo: Objective: The aim of this study is to carry out an epidemiological survey and evaluate habits and the prevalence of lip lesions in rural workers in Vitória de Santo Antão/PE, Brazil. Study design: After being informed about and sign the informed consent form, 80 participants interviewed, 50 men and 30 women, received instructions of prevention and self-diagnosis, responded habits e sun exposure questionnaire and had the lips inspected by previously trained and calibrated examiners. Those who needed, were referred to university clinic or specialized municipal service center. Results: The findings indicated that 16.25% of the population evaluated exhibited smoking habits, while 40% consume alcohol. The use of hats during activities was reported by 80% of participants. Body sunscreen usage was reported by 31.25% of respondents, whereas lipsunscreen usage was reported by 18.75%. The prevalence of lip injuries was 43.75%, with a higher prevalence observed in men (48%) compared to women (36%). Conclusion: The evaluated populations sense of care is low and the prevalence of lip lesions is high, prevention campaigns are necessary to instruct and explain about the necessity of sun exposure protection.
