Resumo: Introduction: Acute herpetic gingivostomatitis (AHGS) is the clinical manifestation of infection by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). The standard treatment is based on the use of antiviral drugs and palliative care aimed at symptomatic relief. Objective: The present study aimed to compare the treatment of AHGS with antiviral combined with corticosteroid versus exclusivelly antiviral treatment. Methods: Clinical files of patients with AHGS who attended a Estomatoloy service were selected, including 10 cases treated with antiviral and corticosteroid and 10 cases treated with antiviral alone. Clinical files and photographic documentation were evaluated to compare the clinical evolution of patients, focusing on symptomatology and healing of oral lesions. Results: The clinical files of patients treated with antiviral combined to corticosteroid showed more rapid healing of oral lesions and relief of symptoms compared to treatment with antiviral alone. The remission of symptomatology was statistically significant (p = 0.004). Conclusion: Based on the results presented, in severe cases with a tendency to progress to erythema multiform the combination of antiviral and corticosteroids (Acyclovir 200mg 1 tablet every 4 hours for 5 days + Prednisone 20mg for 5 days) is recommended as a treatment protocol to reduce pain and lesion healing time for patients with AHGS.
