Resumo: Objective: The aim was to evaluate the prevalence of HPV infection in patients with oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) on a Cancer Center. Study Design: Retrospective cohort study with 1194 patients diagnosed with OPSCC treated between 2000-2022. The data collected included sociodemographic, clinical information and HPV status. Absolute and relative frequencies and odds ratios of variables, prevalence for HPV related to sex and presence of a second primary tumor were calculated. Results: The patients were male (82.9%), white and aged between 50 and 69 years. The most common subsites were tonsils and base of the tongue. HPV+ patients were alcoholics and non-smokers. The prevalence of HPV was 65.7%, 7% higher for females. The prevalence of second primary tumors (STP) was higher for HPV- patients. HPV+ patients have a 50,6% less chance of developing STP compared to HPV- patients. HPV+ is 9.5 times more change to have lymph node metastasis than HPV-. Conclusion: OPSCC is a neoplasm whose factors associated with its carcinogenesis are not yet fully known. STPs were more prevalent in OPSCC HPV-. The higher prevalence of HPV in female indicates the need for public health measures that expand vaccination against HPV infection.
