Título: EXPRESSION OF PTEN AND P-AKT IN ACTINIC CHEILITIS AND LIP SQUAMOUS CELLS CARCINOMA: AN IMMUNOHISTOCHEMICAL STUDY

Resumo: The objective was to evaluate the immunoexpression of PTEN and p-AKT from actinic cheilitis (AC) lesions with epithelial dysplasias (ED) and squamous cell carcinomas of the lower lip (SCCLL). 45 paraffin blocks were selected, 25 of AC and 20 of SCCLL, evaluating cellular intensity and sublocation. The results showed that in the sample evaluated there was a prevalence of males, above the fourth decade of life in both groups. Most AC presented with mild ED (n = 14; 56%) and 11 SCCLL cases (55%) were well differentiated. PTEN immunostaining revealed no statistical difference in the cellular sublocations between the lesions, and no significance was detected between the histopathological gradations of malignancy of ED and SCCLL with the different cellular sublocations of PTEN and p-AKT. There was greater cytoplasmic than nuclear PTEN immunostaining in AC (p = 0.0008) and SCCLL (p < 0.0001). A significant increase in cytoplasmic p-AKT was evidenced in SCCLL when compared to AC (p = 0.0017), as well as a greater amount of cytoplasmic than nuclear p-AKT was detected in SCCLL (p < 0.0001). The findings suggest evidence of the possible involvement of PTEN and p-AKT in the process of lip carcinogenesis.
