Resumo: Objective: Assess the usefulness of psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) in the diagnosis and management of oral diseases.
Study Design: Four oral diseases were chosen to analyze the possible application of PNI in their diagnosis and management: Aphtous stomatitis, Oral Lichen Planus, Burning Mouth Syndrome and Oral Cancer. Pubmed and Google Scholar were used to conduct the search. MesH and isolated terms were considered. Literature was analyzed focusing on three aspects: pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of oral diseases.
Results: 29 articles were initially selected, 20 were discarded due to not having a direct association with oral diseases. Four of the remaining nine referred directly to pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment. Three articles did not consider diagnosis and only one did not refer to treatment.
Conclusion: Psychoneuroimmunology is an emergent field of study in the biomedical sciences, which integrates different organic systems in the origin of diseases. Fundamentals are abundantly found in the literature, but its association to oral diseases is still scarce. It is concluded that its knowledge can help in the understanding of pathogenic mechanisms, the diagnosis and management of oral diseases.
