Resumo: Objective: The objective of this work was to analyze the immunohistochemical expression of mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC) markers (CD44, CD90 and CD146) and its relationship with characteristics of tissue repair in a series of cases of human chronic periapical lesions (CPLs) associated or not with endodontically treated teeth. Study design: Fifteen samples of CPLs from teeth that had not undergone endodontic treatment (CPL1) and ten CPLs from teeth that had been subjected to endodontic intervention (LPC2) were used. Paraffin sections were submitted to immunohistochemical analysis utilizing the immunoperoxidase technique with anti-CD44, anti-CD90, anti-CD146 and anti-collagen I antibodies. Collagen fibers were evaluated by histochemical analysis using picrosirius red staining. Results: A higher expression of MSC markers was verified in LPC2, through positive immunoexpression for CD44, CD90 and CD146. The higher expression of MSC markers was related to lower intensity of the inflammatory infiltrate and increased picrosirius red staining. Conclusion: The results suggest that lesions associated with endodontically treated teeth manifest an advanced stage of the reparative process, and MSCs appear to influence the biological events associated with repair in CPLs.
