Título: ORAL SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA IN YOUNG ADULTS: AN ARGENTINE MULTICENTRIC STUDY. PART 2.

Nome do Apresentador: Javier Ignacio GIMENEZ

Categoria do Trabalho: Painel de pesquisa científica (PPC)

Área Temática: Estomatologia

Resumo: Objective: To characterize a cohort of young adults with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), considering both common and uncommon risk factors.
Methods: A retrospective descriptive study was conducted on patients diagnosed with OSCC under 45 years of age, at four diagnostic centers in Argentina (located in Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Salta, and Chubut), from 2009 to 2023. Data regarding risk factor were recorded.
Results: Seventy-two patients were included, with an average age of 37.77 years (range: 21-45), comprising 51 men (70%) and 21 women (30%). Regarding classical risk factors, 52 individuals (72%) were never smokers, and 70 (97%) were never drinkers. Mate consumption was found in 43 patients (59.7%), and Chronic Mechanical Irritation (CMI) was recorded in 40 cases (55%). The combination of dental and functional factors (combined CMI) was the most common source of CMI. Cancer inheritance and exposure to environmental carcinogens were less frequent (n=20; 27.7% and n=11; 15%, respectively).
Conclusion: OSCC in individuals under 45 years old did not present the same risk factor pattern found in the current literature. Further studies, including non-canonical risk factors such as CMI and cancer inheritance, are needed to clarify the landscape of OSCC in young adults.
