Resumo: Objective: This review includes findings from qualitative research to gain a deeper understanding of the influence and experiences of dysgeusia in head and neck cancer patients, identify potential preventive and suggest recommendations for future investigations. Methods: Literature search on English-language articles indexed in PubMed, SCOPUS and Web of Science using the MeSH terms "Dysgeusia", "Parageusia", "Altered Taste" and "Head and Neck Cancer" from relevant studies published in the last 10 years. Results: Twelve articles were reviewed. Some studies report that zinc gluconate had a positive effect on taste disturbances in patients with idiopathic taste loss. A systematic review proposes combining taste and smell training, personalized dietary advice, and flavor enhancement with zinc-based oral solutions during QT and/or TR in order to prevent and help improve dysgeusia. The expert consensus opinion at WALT 2022 recommends additional clinical investigations and research studies for PBM (photobiomodulation) in the management of dysgeusia associated with oncotherapy. Conclusion: Studies on PBM for specific application in dysgeusia are necessary for the development of preventive and interventional strategies. Investigations into the effects of zinc-based therapy in reducing the incidence of dysgeusia need to be clarified. The association between these two possible approaches may be promising.
