Resumo: Objectives:Analyze the scientific evidence on salivary biomarkers that predict oral cancer; to elucidate how biosensors can be instruments for the detection of oral cancer through spittle and to demonstrate that biosensors can represent a promising biotechnology for the detection of oral cancer in early stages. Methods: Searches were conducted in the electronic databases of the Pub Med, Scielo and BVS Dentistry platforms, using the terms in Portuguese/English: "biomarkers AND oral cancer" and "biosensors AND oral cancer".The research included articles published in the last 10 years. Results: Twenty eight articles were reviewed. Thematic analyses reveal that circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA), circulating tumor cells (CTCs), and exosomal miRNAs are emerging biomarkers that can be applied in cancer detection, treatment planning, and response monitoring.Although there are numerous biomarkers with high sensibility and specificity results, there is still a need for studies with larger samples and analytical methods that can constitute a real advance in time and cost. Biosensors are being developed for recognition of salivary biomarkers that predict oral cancer. Conclusion: The use of biosensors for the recognition of salivary biomarkers may be a promising alternative for early oral cancer diagnoses, developing more precise "targets" for cancer cells, and reducing their side effects.
