Categoria do Trabalho: Painel de pesquisa científica (PPC)

Área Temática: Patologia Oral

Resumo: Objective. To analyze a case series of vascular anomalies of the jaw (VAJ).

Study Design.Twelve cases of VAJ were retrieved from a single oral-maxillary pathology center
(study period: eight years); their histopathological, histochemical, and
immunohistochemical features and the clinical-radiographic data available in the files
were re-evaluated.

Results. All VAJ cases were hemangiomas, accounting for 3% of all oral vascular lesions and
0.06% of all oral-maxillary pathology filed at the center. Microscopic features of VAJ
corresponded to venous (5/12 cases, 42%), arteriovenous (4/12 cases, 33%), and
capillary cavernous hemangioma (3/12 cases, 25%); three cases showed reactive
bone formation. Mean age was 43.5 years (11 to 79 years), males were more
frequently affected (7/12 cases; 58.3%), and the mandible was the prevalent location
(9/12 cases, 75%). The tumors measured >3cm in diameter (8/12 cases, 67%).
Radiographically, they were mixed lesions with ill-defined borders (6/9 cases, 67%);
two cases were a radiographic finding.

Conclusion.VAJ are rare. All the cases in our series were hemangiomas. Diagnosis of these
vascular lesions requires thorough examination of histological, histochemical,
immunohistochemical, and clinical-radiographic features. To our knowledge, this is the
first report on the frequency of VAJ in Latin America and thus contributes to the scant
reports in the literature.
