Resumo: Objective. To analyze a case series of vascular anomalies of the jaw (VAJ).Study Design.Twelve cases of VAJ were retrieved from a single oral-maxillary pathology center(study period: eight years); their histopathological, histochemical, andimmunohistochemical features and the clinical-radiographic data available in the fileswere re-evaluated.Results.All VAJ cases were hemangiomas, accounting for 3% of all oral vascular lesions and0.06% of all oral-maxillary pathology filed at the center. Microscopic features of VAJcorresponded to venous (5/12 cases, 42%), arteriovenous (4/12 cases, 33%), andcapillary cavernous hemangioma (3/12 cases, 25%); three cases showed reactivebone formation. Mean age was 43.5 years (11 to 79 years), males were morefrequently affected (7/12 cases; 58.3%), and the mandible was the prevalent location(9/12 cases, 75%). The tumors measured >3cm in diameter (8/12 cases, 67%).Radiographically, they were mixed lesions with ill-defined borders (6/9 cases, 67%);two cases were a radiographic finding.Conclusion.VAJ are rare. All the cases in our series were hemangiomas. Diagnosis of thesevascular lesions requires thorough examination of histological, histochemical, immunohistochemical, and clinical-radiographic features. To our knowledge, this is thefirst report on the frequency of VAJ in Latin America and thus contributes to the scantreports in the literature.
