Área Temática: Patologia Oral

Resumo: To evaluate the role of HPV in conventional (CSCC) and rare subtypes (RSCC) of squamous cell carcinoma of the oral mucosa.

The study comprised 105 biopsies (71 CSCC and 34 RSCC); histopathological features and clinical data were evaluated. Genotyping of HPV for 36 genotypes of high (HPV-HR) and low oncogenic risk (HPV-LR) were performed. Immunohistochemical expression of p16, p53, SOX2, and Ki67 was evaluated in HPV+ samples.

HPV was detected in 12/105 cases (11.4%), 4 CSCC (3 poorly differentiated, 1 well-differentiated) and 8 RSCC (verrucous:3, basaloid:2, cuniculatum:1, achantolytic:1, adenosquamous:1); p16 was negative in CSCC and positive in 4/8 RSCC (50%); p53 was positive in 6/12 cases (50%), 3/4 p16+cases were p53-; SOX2 was positive in 9/12 cases (75%). Ki67 was ≤25% in 9/12 cases and 30% in 3/12. Mean age of HPV+ cases was 63 years (40-80 years); 11/12 cases were men; the prevalent location was the alveolar ridge (5/11 cases-45%).

The frequency of HPV in SCC of the oral mucosa is low; the higher detection of HPV in RSCC is noteworthy and requires further analysis. HPV-HR and p16 positivity observed in 50% of RSCC suggest a possible viral etiology. The present results contribute to the scant regional data.
