Nome do Apresentador: Josefina Martínez-Ramírez

Categoria do Trabalho: Painel de pesquisa científica (PPC)

Área Temática: Estomatologia

Resumo: Purpose: To assess the frequency and nature of communication demands with clinicians from the perspective of an oral and maxillofacial pathology service. Methods: This cross-sectional study examined 2,500 histopathological requisition records spanning from 2014 to 2022. Data on patient demographics, clinical details, diagnoses, interprofessional communication, and factors influencing histopathology report turnaround time were collected. Results: The patient cohort consisted of 1,127 (45.1%) males and 1,373 (54.9%) females, aged between 0 and 90 years. Histopathology reports yielded 1,933 (77.3%) definitive diagnoses, 562 (22.48%) descriptive diagnoses, and 5 (0.2%) cases with insufficient material for analysis. The median time for report delivery was 4 days. Interprofessional communication was required in 293 (11.7%) cases, primarily driven by requests for radiological images (98, 33.4%), clinical images (86, 29.4%), and additional clinical information (17, 5.8%). Delays in diagnosis delivery, observed in 775 (31%) requisitions, were mainly attributed to decalcification needs (137, 17.7%), absence of clinical or radiographic images (87, 11.2%), and requirements for immunohistochemical stains (14, 1.8%). Conclusion: Effective communication between clinicians and oral pathologists is paramount for achieving accurate clinical-pathological correlation and definitive diagnoses, thereby enhancing patient care.
