Resumo: Objective: to evaluate the immunoexpression of interleukins 6, 17 and 18 in orallichen planus and their correlation with clinicopathological features. Materials andMethods: Forty oral lichen planus lesions were submitted to immunohistochemicalreactions directed against CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes, and interleukins 6, 17and 18. Results: Hyperkeratosis was observed in 21 cases (53%), and exocytosis ofT CD4+ and T CD8+ lymphocytes were present in, respectively, 17 (42%) and 30(75%) cases. Interleukin 6 was the most expressed interleukin both in epithelium andconnective tissue. Interleukin 17 expression was intense in the connective tissue in40% of the cases. Interleukin 18 expression was mostly mild/moderate in epithelium(40% of the cases) and connective tissue (45%). Exocytosis was associated with ahigher interleukin expression, and interleukin 17 expression was higher in epitheliumshowing hyperkeratosis. Conclusions: the studied interlekins are more expressedwhen there is exocytosis of both T CD4+ and T CD8+ lymphocytes. Expression ofthese interleukins can be associated with the epithelial alterations encountered inoral lichen planus, participating in the pathogenesis and modulating the clinicalexpression of the disease.
