Título: VELSCOPE AS A COMPLEMENTARY DEVICE IN THE SCREENING OF ORAL POTENTIALLY MALIGNANT DISORDERS

Resumo: OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effectiveness of the VELscope device in the diagnosis and screening of oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs). STUDY DESIGN: A literature review was carried out in the PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, Web Of Science databases using the descriptors "Diagnostic Equipment", "Mouth Neoplasms", "Pathology". RESULTS: From a total of 93 publications, 17 articles were selected between 2019 and 2023. The studies of oral lesions submitted to conventional oral examination (COE) followed by VELscope and its characteristics of autofluorescence were compared with the anatomopathological diagnosis. The variables showed sensitivity and specificity values of 50% and 69%, while the positivity predictive value was 47.6% and the negative 71.4%, considering inaccurate the isolated use in the definitive diagnosis of dysplasias and high-risk lesions. CONCLUSION: The device presented limitations, low accuracy, suggested as an auxiliary method in clinical examination, recommending biopsy and histopathological as gold standard in the detection of OPMDs.
