Resumo: Objective: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is a cancer that accounts for a significant proportion of cancer-related morbidity and mortality worldwide. There is an urgent need for new, accurate diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for HNSCC. Therefore, this review focuses on the intricate relationship between HNSCC and alterations in glucose metabolism, highlighting the important role of microRNAs (miRNAs) in this context. Study design: A narrative review of the literature including articles evaluating the role of miRNAs in the regulation of genes involved in glucose metabolism in HNSCC was included. Results: In HNSCC, miRNAs play a regulatory role in controlling the expression of genes involved in glucose metabolism pathways. Dysregulation of specific miRNAs was observed to regulate expression of key glycolytic enzymes like HK2, glucose transporters such as GLUT family, and modulate intracellular signaling pathways like AKT/mTOR. Conclusion: These intricate findings underscore the fundamental role of miRNA alterations in orchestrating the dynamics of glucose metabolism in HNSCC. Targeting these miRNAs has the potential to serve as an effective strategy in the management of patients with HNSCC. Understanding these interactions holds promise for the development of targeted therapeutic interventions and diagnostic approaches to more effectively manage HNSCC.
