Resumo: Clinical case report, care of a 72-year-old female patient, complaining of intense xerostomia, resulting from oncological treatment with chemotherapy and radiotherapy in the head and neck region, completed 11 years ago. The dose received by the patient was 60 Gy in the facial region and 50 Gy in the supraclavicular fossa region.
Salivary gland scintigraphy was performed, which revealed the presence of tracer, but with a marked deficit in the parotid and submandibular glands.
Low-power laser treatment was performed and bethanechol hydrochloride was prescribed. After 25 sessions, the patient showed significant improvement, reporting greater comfort in chewing and swallowing, less dependence on water intake and greater quality of life.
It can be concluded that despite the long period of little activity, when there are still signs of production, it is viable to invest in the recovery of salivary gland function. There is a video with patient testimonials.
