Resumo: Objective: To analyze the relationship between race/ethnicity and the healthcare interval for the diagnosis of oral cancer in Brazil.Study Design: Cross-sectional and hospital-based study, including 12,421 cases retrieved from the Hospital Cancer Registries of Brazil. The Wilcoxon rank-sum test and negative binomial Poisson regression model were applied. Results: The retrieved records represented 6,523 (53%) white individuals and 5,898 (47%) non-white individuals. Among individuals of both races, there was heterogeneity according to sociodemographic, clinical, and therapeutic variables, being homogeneous for the most important risk factors for the disease. There were significant differences between white and non-white Brazilians regarding all analyzed time intervals (p < 0.001). White individuals took less time to start treatment after screening (median of 57 days), receive the diagnosis after consultation (median of 9 days), and start treatment after diagnosis (median of 35 days) than non-white patients (medians of 71, 12, and 47 days, respectively). Conclusion: These data may contribute to the planning of strategies to reduce the healthcare interval and improve the quality of care for individuals with oral cavity cancer in Brazil, considering the differences between population groups.Funding Source: CNPq.
