Título: LEISHMANIASIS: A HEAD AND NECK CASE REPORT

Nome do Apresentador: Carolina Dos Santos Padula RUPEREZ

Categoria do Trabalho: Painel de caso clínico (PCC)

Área Temática: Estomatologia

Resumo: A 73-year-old-feminine patient was addressed for evaluation of the presence of a
granulomatous ulcer throughout the oral and nasal mucosa and consequently loss of
nasal cartilage. Intraoral examination reveals an extensive lesion with a granulomatous
ulcer involving bilaterally the hard palate, soft palate and covering the uvula and
affecting the pharynx. The patient also reported a sore throat 4 months ago,
odynophagia, cough, and nosebleed. The previous medical history revealed the presence
of hypertension, cholesterolemia, hypothyroidism, using atenolol, atorvastatin, and
levothyroxine respectively for these diseases. The diagnostic hypotheses were
leishmaniasis, murcomycosis and lymphoma. An incisional biopsy was conducted in the
palate region showing an intense lymphomononuclear inflammatory infiltrate affecting
fibrous connective tissue with focal areas of granuloma and presence of amastigote.
Immunohistochemistry was positive for anti-leishmania. Thus, leishmaniasis diagnosis
was stablish and the patient was referred for treatment and follow-up, resulting in the
disappearance of the lesion.
