Título: IMMUNOHISTOCHEMICAL EXPRESSION OF SURVIVIN IN ORAL BIOPSIES TAKEN WITH SURGICAL LASER COMPARED TO SCALPEL

Categoria do Trabalho: Painel de pesquisa científica (PPC)

Área Temática: Patologia Oral

Resumo: Objective: It is not known if laser biopsies can show differences in immunohistochemical patterns. The aim of this study was to verify the immunohistochemical expression of the survivin protein in biopsies of oral lesions taken with a surgical laser compared to those taken with a conventional scalpel.
Methods: Cases of fibroma biopsied with a conventional scalpel and with a laser were selected. Histological sections from these cases were subjected to quantification of the immunohistochemical expression of survivin, at sites with standardized distances in relation to the thermal damage and the edges of the specimens. Marker expression was quantified using a semi-automated image subtraction and deconvolution method.
Results: Survivin expression was less frequent in fibroblasts and in the vascular wall of sites close to the thermal damage in the laser cases. There was less expression of the marker in the regions adjacent to the thermal damage in the biopsies taken with the laser compared to the scalpel (Mann-Whitney test, p=0.008). In the areas far from the thermal damage, there was also a reduction in survivin expression in laser biopsies (Mann-Whitney test, p=0.024).
Conclusion: There was a reduction in the extent of survivin marking in lesions biopsied with laser, especially in fibroblasts and in the vascular wall, in regions adjacent to thermal damage and also distant from this reference.
