Área Temática: Patologia Oral

Resumo: Objective: To evaluate podoplanin (PDP), E-cadherin (CDH1), and Vimentin (VIM) immunoexpression in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Study Design: Tissue samples from 39 cases of OSCC were subjected to immunohistochemistry using anti-D2-40 (PDP), anti-VIM, and anti-CDH1 antibodies. The categorization of PDP expression patterns included: 1 (membrane expression restricted to the periphery of the epithelial islands), 2 (beyond the periphery of the tumor islands), and 3 (weak and diffuse expression in disorganized epithelial tissue). The expression of CDH1 and VIM was assessed quantitatively and qualitatively at the tumor invasion front. Clinicopathological parameters were also evaluated. Results: PDP pattern 3 exhibited a higher percentage of CHD1 positive cells. Moreover, pattern 3 was also associated with tumor size larger than 4 cm (p=0.035), located on the tongue (p=0.003), and advanced TNM stages (p=0.05). A higher percentage of VIM positive cells was observed in dispersed invasion pattern (p=0.009), metastasis development (p=0.044), and moderate histopathological grading (p=0.000). Conclusion: The PDP and VIM may play significant roles in promoting epithelial-mesenchymal transition and aggressive tumor behaviour in OSCC, while CDH1 expression pattern may be justified as a compensatory response to counteract the effects of PDP on cell adhesion and invasion.
