Resumo: Objectives: To analyze the effects of photobiomodulation with blue Light Emitting Diode (LED) on third-degree skin burns repair through clinical and histological features. Study Design: Wistar rats were divided into control (CTRL) (n=25) and blue LED groups (n=25), with subgroups of five rats for each time of euthanasia (7, 14, 21, 28 and 32 days after burn). After lesion induction, blue LED group was treated daily (470nm, 1W, 0.44 W/cm2, 12.5 J/cm2, 28 seconds per point) in four points of the lesion (total: 50 J/cm2). Tissues were evaluated regarding clinical aspects, reepithelization, inflammatory infiltrate and presence of mast cells. Statistical tests considered p<.05 as significant. Results: At day 7, bleeding background was present in 3 cases (60%) in the CTRL. LED group revealed superior reepithelization at 7 and 14 days (p<.05), greater amount of inflammatory cells at day 7 (p<.05) and of mast cells at 21 and 32 days (p<.05), when compared to CTRL. Conclusions: Blue LED can modulate the repair process of third-degree burns on the skin by stimulating reepithelization and inflammatory response at initial stages. Also, this therapy could induce a higher concentration of mast cells. This treatment disclosed no significative effects on the retraction of third-degree burns.
