Resumo: Objective: The objective of this study was to analyze the levels of cytokines in saliva and blood of kidney transplant recipients (KTR) after transplantation and to correlate these levels with oral and systemic alterations. Study design: Saliva and blood samples were collected in 48 KTR in two distinct times: up to one month (T1) and above six months after transplantation (T2). Cytokine levels were evaluated using the Luminex® platform, quantifying IL-6, IFN-γ, IL-10, IL-8, IL-4, and TNF-α. To analyze the differences in cytokine levels considering T1 and T2 and clinical outcomes, we used Pearsons linear correlation statistical test (P-value= 0.05). Results: The prevalence of viral infections, anemia, hyperglycemia, oral candidiasis and stomatitis were significantly reduced from T1 to T2. The measurement of cytokines analyzed at T1 and T2 were significant different for the following relations: serological values of IL-10 for CMV, BKv and oral candidiasis; TNF-alpha for CMV and cardiovascular events and IL-8 for CMV. Saliva values of TNF-alpha for anemia, IL-8 for diarrhea, herpes simplex, and acute organ rejection. Conclusion: This study demonstrated for the first time the association of the immunological profile of KTR salivary analysis with critical outcomes such as cardiovascular events and acute rejection.
