Título: CLINICAL FLUORESCENCE AS AN AID IN THE DIAGNOSIS OF ACTINIC CHEILITIS: A STUDY AMONG SUGAR CANE HARVESTERS IN BRAZIL

Nome do Apresentador: Luana Lumi MINAMI

Categoria do Trabalho: Painel de pesquisa científica (PPC)

Área Temática: Patologia Oral

Resumo: Objective: To evaluate the usefulness of clinical fluorescence in the diagnostic process of actinic cheilitis (AC) in a cohort of sugar cane harvesters with significant exposure to ultraviolet radiation.
Study design: This cross-sectional cohort study involved 165 sugar cane harvesters to diagnose AC. Thirty patients exhibited signs of actinic cheilitis and underwent a clinical fluorescence examination using the VelScope device. This group was randomly divided into Group 1 (G1) and Group 2 (G2). G1 participants underwent biopsy solely based on clinical signs, while those in G2 underwent biopsy with the additional aid of clinical fluorescence examination.
Results: G1 comprised 15 males aged 25 to 60 years (mean age: 38) with an average duration of sunlight exposure during work of 24 years. G2 consisted of 15 males aged 21 to 56 years (mean age: 34) with an average duration of sunlight exposure during work of 19 years. Among the 15 patients in G1, 11 were microscopically confirmed to have AC (73%). In G2, all patients were confirmed to have AC under microscopic examination.
Conclusion: Clinical fluorescence was found to be a valuable tool in guiding the biopsy procedure for suspected cases of AC.
