Resumo: There is still concern about selecting restorative dental materials capable of tolerating the unfavourable long-term side effects on oral health following head and neck cancer radiotherapy patients. This case series evaluate the relationship between salivary flow and the clinical behaviour of restorative materials on irradiated patients. Twelve radiation-related caries on four head and neck cancer patients were restored with a nanofilled composite resin (CR), an encapsulated conventional glass ionomer (GI), and a multi-ion releasing composite (MIR). The patients salivary flow was measured in stimulated and non-stimulated ways. Restorative clinical performance was double-blind evaluated for three months regularly during a 12-month. The lower the salivary flow, the more impaired was the clinical behaviour of the restorative materials. CR was stable over one year. GI was the most susceptible material. MIR behaved similarly to CR in most cases. Under extreme conditions, MIR showed clinical behaviour more similar to GI than to CR.
