Título: VERRUCOUS CARCINOMA OF THE TONGUE IN AN ELDERLY WOMAN: CASE REPORT

Resumo: Verrucous carcinoma is a variant of squamous cell carcinoma, with the mouth being the main affected site. It`s growth is slow and progressive with a low degree of malignancy. A 85-year-old female patient went to stomatologist complaining of pain in a sublingual lesion that had lasted one year and a half. In the intra-oral physical examination, a vegetating tumor was observed, with unclear boundaries, white, with leukoplastic areas and ulcerated areas. An incisional biopsy was performed. The anamotopathological exam showed mucosa covered by parakeratinized stratified squamous epithelium with acanthosis, hyperkeratosis and projections of epithelial ridges with exocytosis pushing underlying connective tissue. The exam showed minimal cellular atypia and a discrete subepithelial inflammatory infiltrate, compatible with verrucous carcinoma. She was referred to a head and neck surgeon for treatment.
