Resumo: Objective: This study explored teledentistrys viability in monitoring actinic cheilitis patients (AC). Study design: The design was a controlled crossover non-randomized clinical trial involving AC. In the first step, an online video consultation was performed and then, a conventional consultation was carried out with the same patient to monitor the signs and symptoms. During the online appointment, the patients sent clinical photos. Results: The sample comprised 36 patients (20 male, 16 female) with varying degrees of epithelial dysplasia; 66% were asymptomatic, with 30.6% reporting dryness. The most common clinical presentation was plaques associated with erosive areas. There was an accuracy of 97.2% between the online and in-person appointments in relation to the assessment of clinical alterations. The only case where disagreement occurred may be attributed to the low quality of photos sent by the patient, which hindering the provision of information about the lesion. Conclusion: Teledentistry may be used to monitor AC reducing their costs and time. However, the quality of mobile phone cameras or internet connections, as well as digital literacy could be barriers to be overcome. Finally, it is important to recognize that this approach cannot replace face-to-face consultation in all cases.
