Título: HISTORICAL ANALYSIS OF THE INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS OF ORAL PATHOLOGY AND MEDICINE (STOMATOLOGY): A SCOPING REVIEW

Resumo: Objectives: The purpose of this scoping review was to outline the global spread and historical development of Oral Medicine and Oral Maxillofacial Pathology international societies and associations. Additionally, it offers an analysis of these organizations noteworthy contributions to the advancement of oral health. Study design: This review was conducted according to the guidelines of the JBI Scoping Review Methodology Group and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). An electronic search of MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences (LILACS), and the grey literature was conducted. Results: Eighty-four sources were included in this review. Out of the 46 professional associations/societies identified, 39 represented a country or geopolitical region, two represented continents, two represented multinational organizations and three multinational study groups. Conclusions: There is limited historical documentation on the establishment and expansion of organizations focused on Oral Medicine and Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology worldwide, making it challenging to characterize these processes. Analysis of global data reveals varied development and distribution. Therefore, it is crucial to increase efforts to promote oral health.
