Resumo: A 36-year-old female with xerostomia was referred for salivary flow assessment due to investigation for ganglionopathy/polyneuropathy secondary to Sjögren's Syndrome. Medical history revealed sensory ataxia, tactile, painful, and vibratory hypoesthesia on all four limbs, as well as osteomyelitis on the left foot. The intraoral examination revealed dehydrated oral mucosa throughout. Sialometry was performed, revealing an unstimulated whole saliva flow rate of 0.1 mL/min and a stimulated whole saliva flow rate of 0.2 mL/min. A minor salivary gland biopsy was conducted, which diagnosed focal lymphocytic sialadenitis with a focal score of 2.2. The patient is currently under clinical monitoring. Oral medicine and oral pathology specialists can diagnose Sjögren's Syndrome based solely on sialometry, specifically an unstimulated whole saliva flow rate of ≤ 0.1 mL/min, and a histopathological result of focal lymphocytic sialadenitis score of ≥ 1.0. This underscores the important role of these specialists in the diagnosis of Sjögrens Syndrome.
