Resumo: A 72-year-old female patient attended the otorhinolaryngology service due to a lesion in the oral and nasal cavities. The patient had uncontrolled diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, fibromyalgia, and was a former smoker. During the physical examination, black crusts with a bad odor were found, causing nasal obstruction and affecting the right eye and orbit, resulting in complete loss of vision. Intraoral examination revealed a necrotic ulcer on the hard palate, which led to oral-nasal communication and collapse of the palate. An incisional biopsy was performed, and the morphologic findings revealed necrotic bone with resorption areas associated with an acute inflammatory process containing bacterial colonies and hyphae. The culture test confirmed the diagnosis of mucormycosis, with the presence of Rhizopus sp. The treatment was with Amphotericin B, but the infection progressed to the sphenoid bone. The clinical presentation of the underlying diseases associated with morbidity acquired after surgery led to the patient's died seven months after diagnosis.
