Resumo: Objective:To analyze a series of cases of peripheral odontogenic tumors and allied lesions (peripheral cemento-ossifying fibroma).
Study Design:Ninety-two cases of peripheral odontogenic tumors and peripheral cemento-ossifying fibromas were collected. Their histopathological and clinical-radiographic features were reevaluated.
Results:These tumors accounted for 0.13% of oral and jaw pathologies. Peripheral cemento-ossifying fibroma was the most frequent lesion (48cases; 52%), followed by peripheral odontogenic fibroma (20cases; 22%). Mean age was 38 years (4-78 years). Women were affected more frequently; the predominant location was the buccal aspect of the anterior sector of the maxilla (25cases; 27%). The prevalent clinical diagnosis was epulis (44cases; 54%).
Conclusions:Peripheral odontogenic tumors, including peripheral cemento-ossifying fibroma, are infrequent. To our knowledge, this is the first study on the frequency and distribution of these tumors conducted in Latin America, adding to the few publications in the literature. Diagnosis of these tumors requires thorough analysis of the histopathological and clinical-radiographic features.
