Título: SMOKING, THE ETERNAL RISK FACTOR FOR ORAL CANCER: 30 YEARS OF PREVENTIVE ACTIONS IN THE STATE OF PARANÁ-BRAZIL.

Resumo: Tobacco consumption continues to occupy a significant space in Brazilian and international charts: main risk factor for oral cancer. Objective: to report 30 years of oral cancer prevention through anti-smoking campaigns in the State of Paraná. Method: between 1989-2018, divided into periods, health actions were carried out for oral cancer prevention in Paraná-Brazil. Anamnesis/intraoral clinical examination was performed in individuals over 30 years of age, participants of the campaigns. All answered a questionnaire with personal data and reports of risk habits, such as smoking and alcohol consumption. Results/Discussion: There were 29,682 people and 6,314 mouth lesions were detected in 21.3% of the evaluated population. The lesions found were: traumatic (prosthetic etiology0, inflammatory, leukoplastic, with characteristics for malignancy, papillomas and erythroplakias. Smoking percentages were recorded: 1989-1993(25.7%); 1994-1998(24.4%); 1999-2003(18.7%); 2004-2008(18.2%); 2009-2013(21.0%), 2014-2017(28.3%). There was a drop in the percentage of smokers: 25.7% in 1989 to 18.2% in 2008. Afterwards there was an ascendency 28.8%(2018). This coincided with the publicity of alcoholic beverages in the media Conclusion: In 30 years of oral cancer prevention campaigns, we could feel that health actions are important tools for early diagnosis and guidance on smoking. We believe in health promotions in primary schools.
