Título: MUCORMYCOSIS IN A PEDIATRIC PATIENT WITH ACUTE LYMPHOID LEUKEMIA POST-HSCT - A CASE REPORT

Resumo: Fungal osteomyelitis is a life-threatening and seldom seen opportunistic infection considered an aggressive infection that needs to be addressed promptly to prevent fatal consequences. An 8-year-old male patient at D+242 post-HSCT for ALL, presented an ulcerated lesion with necrotic bed in the hard palate. The incisional biopsy showed acute inflammation with hemorrhage and necrosis with hyphal fungal structures identified on HE staining, with irregular, tortuous thick hyphae morphology, predominant ramifications and right angles. Additional stains showed positive for fungi on the Grocott and negative for BAAR on the Ziehl-Neelsen stain. A surgical debridement approach was performed leading to a cavity about 3.0 cm communicating with the nasal fossa. A prosthetic device was made to occlude the bone defect left by the surgery. The patient is continuing in follow-up and should go through a new reapproach for new debridement of a new extensive area of necrosis in the maxillary sinus.
