Resumo: Objective: To investigate the clinical characteristics of oral lymphomas and their correlation with microscopic features.
Study Design: Using representative high-quality images, the clinical characteristics of 107 oral lymphomas were detailed evaluated by three observers and the data obtained were descriptively analyzed. Bivariate statistical analyses using Chi-square or Fisher exact tests were done to investigate possible associations between clinical characteristics and lymphoma subtypes, predominant cell size and biological grade of each lymphoma subtype. In addition, cases with palatal manifestations were compared to palatal salivary gland tumors.
Results: Diffuse large B cell lymphoma NOS predominated and in this series oral lymphomas mainly affected males, with a mean age of 51 years-old, more often in the maxilla. Pain was commonly reported (32%) and All lesions presented as swellings, while ulceration was found in 69% of the cases, necrosis in 59% and bone destruction in 38%. .It was observed that multiple or bilateral lesions in the palate is more associated with the diagnosis of lymphoma than salivary gland tumor.
Conclusion: The clinical manifestations of oral lymphomas may significantly contribute with microscopic diagnosis, and the presence of swellings bilaterally affecting the palate is more likely to represent a lymphoid lesion than a salivary gland tumor.
