Categoria do Trabalho: Trabalhos Aprovados para Disponibilização em Vídeo (ADV)

Área Temática: Patologia Oral

Resumo: Objective: To analyze the frequency, clinical and demographic features of benign HPV-related epithelial lesions and squamous cell carcinoma of the oropharynx (OP-SCC) in a Brazilian sample. Additionally, to evaluate the HPV status of OP-SCC.
Study Design: Ethical approval (10197919.9.0000.5149). In this cross-sectional study, biopsy records were reviewed from 1997-2021. Cases with a histopathological diagnosis of squamous papilloma, verruca vulgaris, condyloma accuminatum of the oropharynx and OP-SCC were retrieved. Frequency, clinical, demographic data and HPV status for OP-SCC were analyzed descriptively.
Results: 431 (1.45%) oropharyngeal lesions were found, being 307 OP-SCC (71.1%) and 124 benign lesions (28.9%). The frequency of OP-SCC increased every five-years. Benign lesions showed a slight increase in 2007-2011 and stabilized until 2021. OP-SCC affected more male (n= 250; 81.4%) in the sixth decade of life (n= 123; 40.7%). Benign lesions predominated in females (n= 71; 57.3%) in the fifth decade of life (n= 32; 26.7%). In both groups, soft palate was the most common site (n=200; 46.4%). Thirteen cases (6.05%) of OP-SCC were positive for HPV on p16 testing.
Conclusion: The frequency of oropharyngeal lesions, mainly OP-SCC is increasing over the years in a Brazilian sample. Otherwise, the frequency of HPV+ OP-SCC remained low in this institution.
