Resumo: Oral ulcers are common in patients of intensive care units (ICU), and the proper diagnosis and treatment can influence systemic condition and recovery. We report four cases of oral ulcers in ICU patients, affecting three men and one woman, aged from 17 to 57 years old. The reasons for hospitalization were postoperative follow-up, complications of heart disease, and adenomegaly investigation in a patient with AIDS, and nephrotic syndrome. The ulcers affected mainly the lips and tongue. In two of the patients, ulcers originated from trauma of the orotracheal tube or continuous biting due to muscle spasms, while the other two were associated with Chron´s disease and HSV infection, respectively. Ulcers management varied and included the use of neuroleptics, muscle relaxants, photobiomodulation, repositioning of the orotracheal tube, lip hydration or systemic antivirals, with satisfatory evolution. These cases support the importance of the dentist in the multiprofessional hospital team.
