Título: ORAL CANCER IN SOUTH BRAZILIAN POPULATION OVER SIX DECADES: A CLINICOPATHOLOGIC RETROSPECTIVE STUDY

Resumo: Oral cancer is a malignant neoplasm that affects the lips and oral cavity. Some studies have reported changes in the epidemiological profile of patients with this disease in the recent decades. Objective: Evaluate the prevalence of oral malignancy diagnosis and define an oral cancer epidemiological profile in a historical series. Study Design: Histopathological records were retrospective reviewed in three institutions in South Brazil from 1953 to 2019 concerning age, gender, race, anatomical site, clinical aspect, and histopathological diagnosis. Results: Of the 53,065 cases, 987 were oral malignant tumors, representing 1.86%. The mean age of the sample was 58.31 years. The sample consisted of 71.3% men and 27.3% women. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) was the most prevalent diagnosis (80.5%). The number of cases in recent decades was increased and the male-to-female ratio showed constant in all decades. The mean age of the OSCC cases presented constant over the decades. Conclusion: White men, 50-60 years old, alcoholics, and smokers, with an ulcerated, exophytic or leukoplakia lesions on the tongue, floor of the mouth, and mandible were the most frequent clinical aspect in this sample. No expressive changes were observed in the epidemiological profile over the decades for gender and age.
