Resumo: This report demonstrates the role of the dental surgeon in the diagnosis and treatment of trauma to the oral mucosa, in a 55-year-old male patient admitted to an oncology intensive care unit after removal of a metastatic tumor. He needed neuromuscular beta-blockers, sedation, vasoactive drugs and orotracheal intubation. During the inpatient period, he developed involuntary biting leading to bleeding ulcers on the mucous membranes and tongue, even though he was sedated. After the dental procedure, the diagnosis was carried out through clinical and laboratory tests, and a mouthpiece was made to protect the structures of oral and conservation of the tracheal tube. In addition, it was associated with hygiene with 0.12% chlorhexidine, application of vitamin E and photobiomodulation with low-level laser. In conclusion, the installation of the protector leads to more comfort and fewer bite events, even though not reducing the lesions resulting from the clinical condition.
