Resumo: Objective: To assess the time elapsed between diagnosis and treatment of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma and the factors associated with delay in starting treatment. Study Design: Data from medical files of all patients diagnosed from April/2019 to March/2020 were analyzed. The maximum time of 60 days to start cancer treatment was considered (Federal Law nº 12.732/2012). Results: The sample consisted of 65 patients: 40 (62%) had tumors in mouth/oropharynx and 25 (38%) had tumors in hypopharynx/larynx. Fifty-four patients (83.1%) started treatment at a mean time of 64.96 (±68.68) days. Eleven treatments (16.9%) were not started due to patient death or loss of follow-up. Among the treatments started, 24 (44.4%) were in up to 60 days and 30 (55.6%) in more than 60 days. Most patients with mouth/oropharynx tumors had treatment started within 60 days, while most patients with hypopharynx/larynx tumors started treatment in more than 60 days (p=0.036). Larger tumors had the treatment started in shorter time (p=0.039). Conclusion: More than half of the sample started treatment in a time ≥60 days. Factors that were associated with delay in starting treatment were the location of the tumor in the hypopharynx/larynx and the smaller size of the primary tumor.
