Resumo: Objective: To evaluate a population affected by potentially malignant disorders (PMDs) of a pathological anatomy service, through a retrospective and observational study.

Study Design: We studied 144 cases of PMDs in the period of 20 years, where the frequency of characteristics such as: age, gender, ethnicity, lesion location, histopathological diagnosis, associated risk factors, presence of epithelial dysplasia, and then a clinical examination of follow up was performed.

Results: As a higher prevalence, we obtained the female gender, the white ethnicity, age group between 61 and 70 years and the buccal mucosa as the most affected site. Leukoplakia was the most frequent PMD, associated risk factors, alcohol and tobacco in male patients were the most prevalent and 06 cases of epithelial dysplasia were found. For the follow up consultation, 31 patients attended and 12 exhibited recurrences of oral lesions.

Conclusion: Here is a lack of epidemiological surveys and follow up clinical examinations for PMDs in Brazil and worldwide for the early detection of lesions, and difficulty in keeping up to date the registration data of public health care services, in addition to low motivation and patient support for prolonged clinical follow-up.
