Resumo: Objective
To evaluate the effectiveness and usability of a mobile health intervention in improving knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) related to oral cancer in older adults.
Study design
A randomized controlled clinical trial with a parallel, single-blind design was conducted in 60 participants aged ≥60 years. Group A used a mobile application including educational videos and serious games, while Group B accessed videos only. KAP outcomes were assessed using a structured questionnaire at baseline, 2 weeks, and 4 weeks. Usability was evaluated throughout the intervention period.
Results
At baseline, less than 30% of participants were aware of oral cancer and fewer than 5% knew about oral self-examination. After 2 weeks, both groups showed improvements in KAP, with greater early gains in the serious games group, particularly in self-examination awareness. At 4 weeks, over 95% recognized oral cancer and understood oral self-examination, and approximately 50% correctly performed all steps of self-examination. No significant differences between groups were observed for most outcomes. Usability was higher in the group using videos combined with serious games.
Conclusion
Mobile-based tele-education improves KAP regarding oral cancer in older adults. The inclusion of serious games enhances usability and may support engagement and early knowledge acquisition.
