Título: Risk Factors and Demographic Characteristics Associated with Oral Cancer in Young Adults: A Case-Control Study AoU data

Resumo: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is typically diagnosed in older adults (> 65 years), but recent studies have reported a rising incidence among young adults (< 45 years) . This trend is concerning because younger patients may have different exposures and behavioral risk factors compared to the traditional older population. Our goal is to identify chronic conditions associated with OSCC in young adults aged < 45 years. We conducted a case-control (1:4) study matched by age, sex, race/ethnicity and alcohol user, identifying 94 young adults diagnosed with OSCC and 376 controls (cancer-free) who have a completed sociodemographic and electronic health record data. We performed bivariate analyses using Chi-square test and t-test. All analyses were conducted in January 2026 using RStudio (version 4.4.2). Results: No differences were observed for tobacco smoking (p = 0.825). However, cases had a higher prevalence of oral diseases (16% vs. 8.5%; p=0.047). Additionally, mood disorders (74.2% vs. 18.7%; p<0.001), diabetes (37.6% vs. 8.5%; p<0.001), and high cholesterol (56% vs. 1.6%; p<0.001) were significantly more common among cases. Early-onset OSCC was strongly associated with chronic conditions and showed a slight association with oral diseases, while no differences were observed for traditional risk factors such as tobacco use.
