Título: ACUTE APICAL ABSCESS IN ONCOLOGY PATIENTS UNDERGOING CHEMOTHERAPY: A RETROSPECTIVE STUDY

Resumo: Objective: This study aimed to characterize features of acute apical abscesses (AAA) in oncology patients undergoing chemotherapy and to identify factors potentially associated with their development.
Study Design: A retrospective observational study was conducted. Data were collected from the Tasy®️ and the Cliniview®️ Systems. Included patients developed AAA during chemotherapy and were over 18 years of age. Edentulous patients were excluded.
Results: Twenty AAA cases were identified, with 70% female and a mean age of 50 years. Solid tumors accounted for 65% of cases, and advanced tumor stages (T3-T4) were present in 60%. Platinum-based agents and antimetabolites were the most common chemotherapy regimens (36.8% each). AAA occurred mainly during early chemotherapy cycles (C1-C2, 53%). Molars were the most frequently affected (66.7%). Apical periodontitis lesions were observed in 88.9%, with a mean maximum diameter of 3.75 mm. C-reactive protein levels increased during AAA and decreased after treatment. Mean leukocyte and neutrophil counts during AAA were 6,081.6/µL and 4,835.3/µL.
Conclusion: AAA in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy is frequent in early cycles. Early dental assessment and preventive strategies are essential to reduce complications and ensure safe oncologic care.
