Resumo: Objective: To evaluate the impact of the mini-Clinical Evaluation Exercise (Mini-CEX) as a
formative assessment tool in an undergraduate oral medicine course. Study design: A comparative
study was conducted between two consecutive cohorts assessed using different methods: a Global
Rating Score (GRS) group and a Mini-CEX group. At the end of the course, students completed
structured anonymous questionnaires evaluating course organization, clarity of objectives,
assessment methods, feedback, and development of diagnostic competencies. Internal consistency
was assessed using Cronbach's alpha, and group differences were analyzed using the
Mann-Whitney U test. Results: A total of 61 students participated (GRS: n = 31; Mini-CEX: n =
30). The questionnaire showed good internal consistency (α = 0.839 and 0.843, respectively). The
Mini-CEX group demonstrated higher agreement across key domains, including course
organization (66.7% vs. 25.8%), clarity of objectives (93.3% vs. 54.8%), assessment understanding
(66.7% vs. 25.8%), feedback usefulness (73.3% vs. 19.4%), and diagnostic reasoning (46.7% vs.
12.9%). Mean scores were significantly higher in the Mini-CEX group (p < 0.001). Conclusion:
Mini-CEX improved clarity, feedback perception, and clinical reasoning, supporting its use as an
effective formative assessment in dental education.
