Resumo: In Brazil, the burden of lip and oral cavity cancer (LOC) has been declining. Given that smoking is the main risk factor for this disease, the implementation of smoking cessation treatment within the Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) in 2004 may have been a key contributing factor. Aim: To assess whether LOC incidence trends changed following the implementation of this policy in Brazil. Study design: This is an interrupted time-series analysis using Global Burden of Disease 2023 study data. Age-standardized incidence rates (1990-2023) were analyzed by sex. Federative units (FUs) were stratified into low and high Human Development Index (HDI) groups based on the median HDI, retrieved from the Human Development Atlas. Segmented regression with the Prais-Winsten method was used to assess trend changes. Results: Before 2004, LOC incidence was increasing for both sexes in Brazil and across HDI FU groups. Post-intervention, all slopes showed decline compared with prior trends. The greatest reductions occurred in males (−1.38; 95% CI: −2.00 to −0.75) and in higher HDI FUs (−1.26; 95% CI: −1.66 to −0.87). Conclusion: LOC incidence trends shifted toward a decrease following the implementation of smoking cessation treatment within the SUS, regardless of sex and FU HDI.
