Título: CHAMOMILE AND HYALURONIC ACID THERAPY FOR THE CONTROL OF SEVERE ORAL MUCOSITIS

Resumo: Oral mucositis (OM) is an adverse effect of radiotherapy in the head and neck region. Severe OM leads to treatment interruption and impacts prognosis levels. Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) has been effective in reducing the severity of OM. Alternative therapies based on chamomile (CM), hyaluronic acid (HA), and licorice extract have been investigated for the treatment of OM. Objective:The aim of this study is to investigate whether the combination of CM, HA, and licorice, as a mouthwash, associated with PBMT and the preventive dental protocol (PDP) (experimental group) is more effective than the exclusive use of PBMT and PDP (control group) for the management of OM. Methodology: This is a two-arm randomized controlled clinical trial. Participants with Head and Neck Cancer indicated for radiotherapy and/or chemoradiotherapy will be recruited and allocated into two groups. The severity of OM will be assessed according to the National Cancer Institute and World Health Organization scales, along with quality of life data from OHIP-14 and PROMS questionnaires, radiotherapy interruption data, adherence to treatment by the MORISKY questionnaire, salivar analysis of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines and nitrite concentration. Expected Results: The experimental group is expected to be superior for the management of OM.
